The best road trip snacks are easy to eat with one hand, don't need a fridge, and won't leave crumbs or melted chocolate all over the car. That means salty-crunchy things like seasoned peanuts and popcorn, protein that keeps like jerky and beef sticks, and something sweet that holds its shape, like saltwater taffy. In winter, fudge works too, because a cold car is the one place chocolate won't melt.

We run a fudge factory on Route 66, so we watch road-trippers restock their snack bags every day. Here's what holds up on a long drive, and what you'll regret packing.

What Makes a Good Road Trip Snack

Before you load up a grocery cart, run every snack through four questions:

  1. Can the driver eat it with one hand? If it needs a fork, a napkin and two hands, it's a rest-stop snack, not a driving snack.
  2. Does it survive the car? Anything that melts, crushes or goes bad without a cooler is a gamble. The dashboard gets hot even in December.
  3. Does it make a mess? Powdered donuts, flaky pastries and anything with orange cheese dust will live in your seat cracks until spring.
  4. Will it actually fill you up? A bag of candy is fun for 20 minutes. Pair sweet snacks with protein or you'll be pulling off for fast food an hour later.

The best snack bag has a mix of salty, sweet and protein. Here's how to fill each slot.

Salty and Crunchy

redneck nutz ghost pepper peanuts 6oz pouch

Seasoned peanuts. Protein, crunch and salt in one handful, with no cooler needed. Our Redneck Nutz ($6.99) come in flavors from mild to dangerous: Cheddar Bacon, Smoky BBQ, Puckerin Dill, Hot Wing, Habanero & Lime, Sriracha & Garlic, and Curry. The resealable pouches matter more than you'd think when a car hits a pothole. Shop Redneck Nutz →

Popcorn. It's light, and it's the easiest snack to share across the back seat. The Uranus Style Popcorn Mix ($6.99) and Uranus Cheddar Popcorn ($8.99) are the road-friendly picks. Sweeter options like Uranus Fresh Buttery Caramel Corn and Peanut Butter Covered Caramel Corn ($10.99 each) travel fine too. Save the chocolate-coated mixes for winter or for after you arrive. From the grocery store: pretzels, nut mixes, and crackers that don't shed crumbs.

Protein That Keeps

jerky group

Beef jerky. The classic road trip food for a reason. It's shelf-stable, filling, and takes a while to eat, which helps on a long, boring stretch of interstate. Uranus Beef Jerky is $9.79 for five bags in different flavors, so everyone gets a turn at picking.

Beef sticks and strips. For the driver, these are easier than a bag of jerky. Uranus Beef Sticks are $2.79 to $2.99 and Uranus Beef Strips are $2.99. Toss a few in the console. Shop jerky, sticks and strips → | Our beef jerky guide →

From the grocery store: string cheese and hard-boiled eggs if you have a cooler, and peanut butter crackers if you don't.

Something Sweet

uranus taffy seasonal mix

Saltwater taffy. Taffy is one of the best sweet snacks for the car. It won't melt into a puddle, one piece lasts a few minutes, and it doesn't crumble. We sell about 40 flavors at $9.99 a pound, from Vanilla and Cherry to Maple & Bacon, Chili Mango and French Toast. If you can't pick, the Saltwater Taffy Variety Mix is $12.99 a pound. Fudge (cold-weather only). This is why holiday drives have an advantage over summer road trips. In November and December, a box of fudge rides in the back seat without any trouble. The Taste of Uranus Fudge Gift Box ($34.99) is a pound and a half of our six most popular flavors. If you're bringing it to relatives, it also counts as the gift. Single flavors are $19.99 a pound. In summer, keep fudge out of the car and eat it when you get there. Shop fudge →

From the grocery store: apples and clementines (minimal mess), dried fruit, and granola bars.

What Not to Pack

  • Chocolate bars in summer. You'll find out why at the first stop.
  • Anything powdered or flaky. Powdered donuts, cheese puffs, and croissants. Your car's upholstery is not ready.
  • Messy fruit. Peaches, oranges you have to peel, and anything that drips.
  • Soda in the cupholder over rough roads. Get bottles with caps.
  • Too much ghost pepper. One person always regrets it, and it's usually the driver.

Stopping on Route 66?

If your drive takes you down I-44 through Missouri, stop in and stock up in person. Uranus Fudge Factory & General Store is at 14400 Hwy Z in St. Robert (Exit 163), roughly halfway between St. Louis and Joplin, and it's open daily 8 AM – 8 PM. If you're on I-70 or I-69 in Indiana, our Richmond and Anderson stores are right off the interstate and open daily 9 AM – 8 PM.

Buying a gift for someone else's road trip? See The Route 66 Road Tripper Gift Guide.

We have roadtrippers come by constantly to pick up snacks, and a perennial fave is the Nutz and the Beef Sticks. We had a family come by on October 20th, 2026 and buy one of each flavour!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best snacks for a road trip? Snacks that don't need a fridge, don't melt and don't make a mess: seasoned peanuts, popcorn, beef jerky and beef sticks, saltwater taffy, pretzels, apples and granola bars. In cold weather, fudge and chocolate are fine too.

What are good healthy road trip snacks? Nuts, jerky, string cheese (with a cooler), apples, clementines and baby carrots all hold up on a drive. Pair a protein with a fruit and you'll stay full longer.

What snacks won't melt in a hot car? Jerky, nuts, popcorn without chocolate, pretzels, crackers and saltwater taffy all handle heat well. Avoid chocolate, fudge and anything with frosting in summer.

What are good road trip snacks for kids? Popcorn, taffy, beef sticks, string cheese and apple slices are easy to hand back and easy to eat in a car seat. Skip anything powdered, crumbly or sticky-sweet if you care about the upholstery.

Can you bring fudge on a road trip? Yes, in cool weather. Fudge keeps for about two weeks at room temperature, so a box rides fine in a cold car in November or December. In summer, the car will turn it into a puddle, so wait until you arrive.

Where can I buy road trip snacks online? Uranus ships Redneck Nutz, jerky, popcorn, saltwater taffy and fudge nationwide from UranusGeneralStore.com. Standard shipping is free on orders over $75 in the continental U.S. when the promotion is running.
